FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What makes a stamp valuable?
A stamp’s value depends on its rarity, issue, denomination, condition, centering, color, gum, perforations and postal history. Errors, unusual cancellations and scarce varieties may also be important. Age alone does not guarantee value.
Are used stamps worth less than unused stamps?
Sometimes, but not always. Many unused stamps are worth more when their original gum remains intact. However, certain used stamps are scarcer or more desirable because of their cancellation, place of use or postal history.
What does “mint never hinged” mean?
Mint never hinged describes an unused stamp with its original gum that has never had a stamp hinge attached. For many modern and classic issues, never-hinged examples may command a premium over hinged or damaged-gum stamps.
How should I store and protect collectible stamps?
Are world stamps a good addition to a collection?
Are modern unused U.S. stamps collectible or usable for postage?
Most unused U.S. postage stamps issued since 1860 remain valid for mailing when their total face value covers the current postage rate. Some may also have collector value, although large quantities of common modern stamps often trade based largely on their usable postage value.
